Horses Deserve Sanctuary, Not Slaughter

Every year, thousands of American horses are shipped internationally to be slaughtered for human consumption. And Pete was almost one of them.

In 1997, Miracle Ranch founder Jerry Finch, walked into a horse auction — not for people to purchase companions, but to buy horses for meat. He met Pete, an eight-month-old colt, wide-eyed and completely alone. The two locked eyes, and that’s when Jerry decided to start Habitat for Horses to give equines safety and sanctuary.

The movement Jerry and Pete set into motion almost thirty years ago has saved thousands of horses, donkeys and minis. But for every horse we save, we know there are many more still at risk. That’s why we’re asking you to take action today. Because if we want to truly protect horses, we have to stop the pipeline that puts them in danger in the first place.

That solution is the Save America’s Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act. This critical piece of legislation would permanently ban horse slaughter in the U.S. and stop the export of horses for slaughter abroad.

If you agree that horses deserve sanctuary, not slaughter, sign our pledge and promise to:
  • Speak out against the repercussions of horse auctions and slaughter, and share Pete’s story.
  • Contact your representative and urge them to pass the SAFE Act. Your message could save an equine’s life.

An estimated 20,000 horses are shipped off for slaughter for human consumption each year, many of whom are retired racehorses or workhorses. They deserve sanctuary, not slaughter, in their final years. Please join us and speak up for them.
