“The National Park Service is welcoming a new Assateague Pony foal born last week.

The mare N9BM-J (known as “Giggles”) gave birth to a pinto colt early on Aug. 17,

The new foal, N9BM-JQ, and his band live most of the year in the very busy developed area and campgrounds. For this reason, the National Park Service is expressly reminding visitors that they must remain a minimum of a bus length (40 feet) away from the wild horses at all times.

Everything is new to a foal. As he grows N9BM-JQ will learn how to interact with the environment from Giggles and other herd members.

About two-thirds of the National Seashore’s foals are born in April, May, and June, but it is not uncommon for foals to be born during other parts of the year. Mares will be very protective of their new foals and it is vitally important for their and their foals’ well-being that visitors give them, and all wild horses, plenty of space.”
