Temperament: Wrangler is unsure about people but, very curious.  He is slow to build trust.  Since we have been working with him we have made slow but, steady progress. He is accepting of gentle pets around the head and neck but, no more than that. Wrangler is nervous in unknown situations or settings.  He is not completely trusting of new people, especially adults.

Physical problems / health issues:  None known.  He appears to be completely healthy.  He wasn’t very cooperative with the vet but, we were able to finally pull his Coggins and vaccinate him.  It is unclear whether he has ever had his hooves trimmed yet, he doesn’t appear to have any problems with them.

Interaction with horses: Wrangler was previously on the bottom of a mixed herd.  In the month that he has been with us, he has been turned out with 2 mares and an older gelding pony.  They have had the typical activities of getting to know each other.  Most of the time Wrangler will keep a small distance from the others but, he is approaching the barn more often.  They are improving though as they tend to stay in the same vicinity as each other in the pasture.

Update:  September 2008  Wrangler gets along well with our older, gelding pony.  He doesn’t show any aggressiveness towards him but, is pushy at feeding.  He should be fed separately.  Our dominant mare has not been accepting of Wrangler so, he is no longer turned out with them.

Interaction with people: While he is willing to let us approach he will turn and run if we have a halter or lead.  Other than that, he is very curious of everything we are doing and will follow us around closely.  He really wants attention and to trust us but, he is just so cautious.

Update: September 2008  This summer Wrangler made significant improvements.  He was willing to accept a halter though not fastened.  He enjoyed being brushed and began to seek out our attention more frequently.  After seeing those improvements I am even more convinced that he has the ability to do more.  He does need VERY consistent handling and a lot of patience.

This weekend Wrangler was standing at the fence while my 7 year old petted him.  My 4 year old wild son ran up to the fence waving a bat.  Wrangler just stood there and watched him.  Then, before I could stop him my son proceeded to whack the fence in front of Wrangler with the bat.  Wrangler just stood there - still being petted and just looking at my son.

History: Donation

Training / abilities:  Unknown.  I do not think he has had any training but, won’t be able to evaluate him better until he is more trusting and willing to be worked.

Experience level required to work with this horse:  Experienced with horses that have trust issues.

Has this horse ever:  Bucked?  Reared? Yes Kicked? Yes. Bitten? No Other?

Ground handling: Catch? No Lead? No Tie? No Trailer? Loaded with use of panels.  Clip? Trim Feet?  Bathe?

Special needs:  Wrangler needs a very patient person who can work with him in his time frame.

Other comments: I believe he would make a very loyal and appreciative pony for someone who can accept him at his current level and go from there.  He really needs to bond with someone in order to be able to trust them.  It doesn’t come easily but, the small improvements are very rewarding when they come.
