Temperament: Gentle but energetic   Very alert and expressive with ears and tail.

Physical problems / health issues: None.

Interaction with horses:  Not aggressive, low herd standing. Friendly towards new horses. Currently pastured with a blind gelding and an older mare.  He is lowest in the herd.  In a mixed herd, Uno is frequently isolated by other geldings, but seems to integrate well with mares. Uno is energetic in the field and loves to run.

Interaction with people:  Generally gentle and calm with people.  He is easily haltered and lead. He prefers not to be handled or touched while eating. He is impatient and pushy when moved from his stall to pasture each morning.  Uno has some trouble standing for grooming and treating wounds. He can be quite defensive when humans approach with medicine.

History:  Uno is a registered Appendix Quarterhorse.  His thoroughbred breeding indicates he was intended for barrel racing or contest horse.  He was donated to HfH when he sustained a puncture wound injury to his right hock.  He was also very thin (Hennecke body score 2) and is continues to gain weight.  He is significantly sway backed.

Training / abilities: Uno is a young horse that needs ground training. Although untested under saddle, it is unlikely that he is trained to ride. Due to his sway back, only  light riding may be possible.

Experience level required to work with this horse: Intermediate to Advanced.  Needs training and consistent handling.  Not a child’s horse, but would be best for a very light rider.  A person who is alert to horse body language will make better progress with Uno.

Has this horse ever:  Bucked? No  Reared? No  Kicked? Yes, during medical treatment. Bitten? No  Other?  Cribs, but does not chew wood.

Ground handling: Catch? Yes. Lead? Yes. Tie? Yes. Trailer?  Loads, unloads and trailers well.  Clip? Yes   Trim Feet? Yes  Bathe?  Yes

Special needs: Currently at 4.5 or 5 body score, Uno needs plenty of groceries as he gains more weight.  He prefers to eat a few bites then walk around, so he needs to be separated for feeding. He tends to crib immediately after feeding. May need cribbing collar.  He will crib on wood or metal bars when stall kept.  No vices when pastured. Uno is calmer when kept in pasture, tends to become nervous when stalled, even overnight.

Other comments: Uno is an attractive sorrel with expressive eyes. Uno prefers not to be stabled. Because Uno is low in herd standing, he is occasionally pushed around. He has had some small scrapes and injuries as a result.  He would be best kept with only one or two other gentle horses rather than a larger herd.
