Temperament: Calm and sweet natured.

Physical problems / health issues: When Twiggy arrived she was very malnourished.  She came in extremely underweight and earned her name because she quickly became referred to as our “resident bathing suit model”.  She will be a beautiful girl once she finishes filling out.  When she arrived at her first foster home in August '06, she had a slight eye infection which was treated with a series of penicillin injections and an eye ointment (Neomycin).  She also had “rain scald” on her rump, which was treated with a Betadine scrub.  Both were fairly cleared up when she left in November '06 to go to training.

Interaction with horses: Relatively calm, middle of the herd, until feeding time where she earned the nickname of “Twisted Sister”.  When other horses are too close by, she will scream and kick at them to stay out of her space.  She gulps her food down, and paws with impatience while eating.  This is probably due to being starved for so long.  Her fosters placed a large rock (bigger than a big fist) in her feed bucket to slow her down a bit.

Interaction with people: She is a mild mannered little mare.  One time, she got excited when the farrier was trimming another horse.  She wanted to come see, and kicked out when she was shooed away by her foster dad.  This was a  one-time incident, and never happened again.

History: Twiggy was found as a stray and surrendered to Habitat.

Training / abilities: She is currently in training.  Her previous foster mom could get no forward motion from her in order to lunge her in the round pen.  She just wanted to follow.

Experience level required to work with this horse: Advanced beginner on the ground.

Has this horse ever: Bucked? No. Reared? No. Kicked? Yes, on one occasion when she was shooed away from another horse being trimmed by the farrier. Bitten? No. Other? N/A

Ground handling: Catch? Very easy to catch. Lead? She will lead when haltered, but occasionally gets a stubborn streak. Tie? Yes. Trailer? Yes. Clip? Not Known.  Trim Feet? Gets impatient.  Needs feet to be handled more.  Needs a firm but patient and understanding farrier.  Does not need sedation. Bathe? Yes.

Special Needs:  Like many other horses, Twiggy has suffered a lot in her life.  She needs love, a kind hand, and an understanding heart from her adopter.   When fed, she needs a stall of her own to lessen the stress of others possibly taking her food.

Other comments:  Because of her small structure, recommend rider (plus tack) weigh no more than 20% of Twiggy's weight in order not to hurt her back.
