Temperament: Trey is a big, sweet, beautiful horse. He is extremely lovable and enjoys attention. He is energetic and once excited, it takes a little while for him to calm back down. He still has a little spunk as he is a Thoroughbred and an ex-racehorse but very easy to handle. He does not like standing still but nothing major. He is not very patient and gets bored easily. Life has to be kept interesting for him. He is also extremely playful.

Physical problems / health issues: Blind in left eye since birth. He is used to it and not spooky, unlike other horses that are blinded after used to having sight. He deals with it very well and just requires some consideration by the handler. He bowed a tendon on the left front, but it is long healed and he is not lame. Currently sound.

Interaction with horses: He gets along great with other horses, but may mount mares in heat.  He recently "dropped" and acted very amorous with a mare at his Foster's boarding stable.  Not terribly unusual behavior for many geldings, but something an adopter might want to consider.

Interaction with people:

History: Trey was donated to the organization when he could no longer be raced in hopes of finding him a loving new home.

Training / abilities: Trey's vet indicated he's sound for sports, but nothing extreme such as eventing. He could easily do lower level hunter work or dressage. He's not overly enthusiastic about jumping on a lunge line and can try to avoid the jumps, but has successfully jumped some lower level heights. He can do the jumping, but might not be "a natural" at it, so will need significant training in this area. He is however a very pretty mover and his current foster mom is working with him coming into the bit more.

August Update:  He is on all aids. He moves away from the leg, does shoulder-ins, turns on the hind and front, and has started side-passing in diagonals. His circles are much smoother and he is more balanced. He is also starting to collect a little better and coming more into the bit. His canter is starting to become slower and controlled and more balanced. He can hold a slow, somewhat collected canter for about 7 - 10 strides now. He goes very nice off a walk to a canter but still needs a little work with canter-walk transitions.

Experience level required to work with this horse: Intermediate on the ground. He needs an experienced rider as he can have spunk and has speed. The rider should have experience with ex-racers and provide further training as Trey is an energetic Thoroughbred and may do a buck when he gets excited.

Has this horse ever:  Bucked? Yes, when fresh and frisky or in an exciting situation. Reared? No. Kicked? No. Bitten? He may try to nib when saddled or in an exciting situation and needs to be corrected immediately.  Other? No.

Ground handling: Catch? Yes, comes to you. Lead? Yes. Tie? Yes. Trailer? Yes. Clip? Unknown. Trim Feet? Yes, picks up feet by himself. Bathe? Yes, even his face.

Special needs: Someone experienced with ex-racer Thoroughbreds and their retraining needs.  Trey can get very fresh under saddle.  He can also become difficult to handle when in an exciting situation or due to lack of turnout and may buck and crow-hop.  The more he's ridden and worked and taught, the better he will get.  The rider should know how to be assertive and confident. He does require daily turnout. A pasture and a buddy, preferably a buddy he can also play with, would be his ideal situation. It allows him to get rid of steam and stay settled.

Other comments:  This is a gem in looks and personality! He is a total sweetheart. He enjoys greatly when he is loved and returns affection. One has to take the time to love on him. He is blind in one eye and is fine with it, just some consideration is needed when handling him. He senses where you are when you work on him and takes great care to respect your space. He is an ex-racer and can still easily get excited and become a handful then. The rider should have an arena available for training.
