Temperament: Tigger
is a very social horse who thoroughly enjoys human contact. He’s a
loving guy. He's also a very pretty, smaller horse who would look
great going English, as well as western. He's got a very "floating"
trot in the pasture.
He is a TWH, but is not gaited.
Physical problems / health issues: Tigger has longstanding, permanent dental
issues that were not resolved when he was younger. He had a regular
floating first where some points were filed down and after a few
months, a more intensive float to take some cutters to a couple of the
big side teeth. The dentist indicated that he didn't dare try to level
off the front teeth because they had been that way for so long and
after floating the molars in back, Tigger is able to slide his mouth
side to side like its supposed to. He was not able to eat hay very
well before and this is why he came to us so skinny. The dentist also
said there is no real way of telling how old Tigger is because of his
teeth. His donor
listed him at 12. He is much improved with the second floating,
he can work in the round pen and nothing drips out of his nose and he
can actually close his mouth. He is no longer hurting when he chews
his hay. Any adopter needs to be aware of the dental issues and be
diligent about getting a float done twice yearly. Tigger is currently
being fed Strategy and he chews it fine.
Interaction with horses: Tigger
is currently pastured with Banjo who picks on him a bit, so he is
not dominant. He has been out with mares in the past and did fine.
Interaction with people:
History: He was a
personal rescue that was donated to HfH.
Training / abilities: Tigger
is only green broke to ride. He has no buck or bad habits under
saddle, but needs work on reining and response to leg pressure to
move off. He accepts a saddle without a problem, though sometimes
does get antsy when tied. He readily follows his foster mom’s other
horse out on trails and does okay with a rider on his back in this
situation, but he lacks the necessary skills to be ridden out alone
on trails reliably. He is very willing, but just doesn’t understand
what is being asked of him with a rider on him.
Tigger is still very hard to bridle though his “training” supposedly
focused on this, he does not take the bit well. He would do better
with a bitless bridle or mechanical hackamore as it’s obvious his
teeth may play into why he does not want to take a bit. He accepts
it eventually, but grudgingly. He’s perfectly fine and settles in
once it’s in his mouth, but getting it in his mouth is still a
problem. He did improve on this with consistent work, but needs
more. He does well with verbal whoas without a bit, so might do
better without the bit as mentioned already.
Experience level
required to work with
this horse: Intermediate
handler, Tigger is feeling very good and he often does not want
to stand still. He will need someone that can make him listen. He
requires an adopter that can get his attention and keep it.
