Temperament: Smitty is food motivated.  He is cautious and has a strong startle reflex.  He panics in place; rather than run, he will freeze.

Physical problems / health issues: Easy keeper but he had very bad hooves.  He is pigeon toed and has no hoof wall.

Interaction with horses: Gets along well with other horses but can be dominant at feeding time.  He thinks he is a stud and will mount mares in season.  He has claimed four mares and will prevent other geldings from interacting with them.  He is not brutal about it, he just won’t allow them near.

Interaction with people: Smitty likes pets and grooming as long as you come at him slowly and he can examine your tools first.  He is cautious of horse-eating items in your hands including fly spray, wormer tubes, and the daily mail.  Smitty needs time to understand things.

History: Donated in lieu of law enforcement seizure.

Training / abilities: Has worn a surcingle and had some desensitization training.

Experience level required to work with this horse: Intermediate to advanced.

Has this horse ever:  Bucked? No Reared? Yes, but not recently Kicked? No Bitten? No Other?

Ground handling: Catch? Yes Lead? Yes Tie? Yes Trailer? Yes Clip? Unknown Trim Feet? Yes, needs work on this Bathe? Yes, needs work on this

Special needs: Needs to learn to trust humans.  Tends to be chubby so needs a lean diet.

Other comments: His hooves will never let him do heavy work but he could be used for trail riding once trained.  Needs to get over his fear issues with patient ground work.
