Sketch
Breed: Paint
Sex: Mare
DOB: 1987
Height: 14.2 hh Color:
Black and white
Location:
Spicewood, TX
Adoption Fee:
$100
Temperament:
Sketch is a sweet horse
and enjoys being brushed
and scratched. She likes
attention from humans.
Physical problems /
health issues:
Sketch was severely
malnourished upon
seizure. She has put on
weight quickly and is
nearly at a normal
weight. She has been
diagnosed with EPM which
is causing her
neurological problems.
She is weak in the hind
end and has other
movement issues that may
be from the EPM. She
started treatment for
EPM on 2/9/07 and will
be in treatment for 28
days. However, since she
may have had EPM for
some time she may still
have some lasting
effects and permanent
neurological damage.
Kicking out to defend
herself may be an issue
but she runs, trots and
turns without any
problem.
Interaction with horses:
Not yet out with other
horses. She was rescued
with two geldings. She
would like to be out
with the other horses.
She sometimes gets upset
when she cannot see the
horses in the other
pasture.
Interaction with people:
Gentle around people,
easy to lead but she has
probably has not been
worked with in a long
time and does not stay
out of the handler’s
space. She will walk
into you and push you
while on the lead but
this would improve with
work. She does paw when
she gets upset, excited
or frustrated. She has
never attempted to kick
or bite in the worst
situations. She will
usually let you walk
right up to her in the
pasture unless she
thinks you are going to
do something to her but
this is getting better
with time.
History: Sketch
was seized by law
enforcement due to
neglect and awarded to
HfH.
Training / abilities:
Companion only horse –
absolutely no riding per
the vet. She has too
much weakness in her
hind end and would not
be safe to ride.
Experience level
required to work with
this horse:
Beginner/Intermediate on
the ground.
Has this horse ever:
Bucked? No. Reared? No.
Kicked? No. Bitten? No.
Other? Paws when
she gets frustrated or
excited.
Ground handling:
Catch? Yes. Lead? Yes.
Tie? Yes. Trailer? Yes.
Clip? Hand. Trim
Feet? Yes, but needs
work. Bathe?
Not yet attempted.
Special needs:
Sketch seems to have no
other health issues
other than the EPM. She
was somewhat difficult
to trim her feet but may
be due to not having
them trimmed in many
years. She has only had
them trimmed once since
the rescue and was much
better by the fourth
foot but much of that
may be due to her EPM
and the weakness that
makes it difficult to
stand on three legs.
Other comments:
She is an easy keeper
and eats feed, hay and
grass very well.
