Sister
Riley
Breed:
Sex: Mare DOB:
1990
Height:
14.3
Color: Red
line-back dun
Markings: White
face, four beautiful
stockings Location:
Boerne, TX
Adoption Fee:
Temperament:
I cannot say enough
about Riley. She is
sweet, beautiful,
obedient, willing, and
wonderful to just about
everyone. She likes
people with calm,
gentle,
patient personalities.
She stops eating just to
be groomed. She is
quite calm, but needs a
little reassurance in
certain situations.
Physical problems / health issues:
Riley came out of a
terrible seizure. She
was beaten with a
two-by-four and
starved. She was
horrifyingly thin and
bony when she came in,
but has basically
bounced back. I
wouldn't say she has
fully recuperated
yet, though. She still
has poor skin and fur.
She is currently eating
Golden Performer and a
tablespoon of pure
coconut oil a day to
help her get back into
condition. Also, her
hooves were awful when
she came to Habitat.
Although her hooves are
almost rehabilitated,
they are still somewhat
dished and fairly
brittle (bouncing back
quickly). Furthermore,
I do believe she has
mild arthritis.
Sometimes she walks very
slowly, and a bit
painfully. Interaction with horses:
Riley is not the alpha
mare. She can be a
feisty little thing, so
she will boss other
horses around, but she
is also very submissive
and polite to the lead
horses. She absolutely
adores foals and
yearlings. At her other
foster home, she was
placed with a young
horse and completely
took her under her
wing. She also gets
along with other mares,
miniatures, and
geldings.
Interaction with people:
Riley is one of the most
special, sweetest mares
I have ever had-no
joke. She is great with
other animals, and loves
children. She can be
the slightest bit
impatient, so you do
need to kindly correct
her occasionally (you
should never be
forceful and
heavy-handed with her,
for she is overly
obedient and tolerant).
Riley just needs a ton
of love and care.
History: Riley
was seized by law
enforcement, as
mentioned above.
Training / abilities:
I am training Riley
under saddle. She is
doing well, and readily
accepts the saddle and
bridle. I have not
ridden her yet, but will
soon. Because she is an
older girl, and doesn't
have the best bones, no
one over about 100 lbs.
(preferably less) should
be riding her. I would
recommend a once-weekly
20-30 minute ride around
the yard, reducing the
amount and duration of
riding with her age.
She should never be
overworked!
Experience level
required to work with
this horse:
Intermediate, or
knowledgeable beginner.
Has this horse ever:
Bucked? Yes,
when unjustly ridden
(she wasn't ready, she
had hardly even had a
saddle on her back
before) Reared? No
Kicked?
No Bitten? No Other?
Ground handling:
Catch? Yes
Lead?
Yes Tie?
Yes Trailer? Yes
Clip? Yes,
fairly
Trim Feet?
Yes Bathe?
Unknown, most likely yes
Special needs:
Lots of love, time, and
care. Adoptive/foster
homes need a good bit of
knowledge, and a fair
amount of experience.
This mare is very
special to many people.
She loves to have a nice
stall with warm bedding,
especially during the
winter. She can never
be left without a
companion, or locked in
her stall without a
companion. She probably
will not be able to be
ridden after a couple of
years, but will always
need a lot of attention
and care.
Other comments:
Riley is a great girl!
I hope she finds a great
home with lots of love
and treats!
