Shay
Breed:
Arabian Sex:
Gelding DOB:
1984
Height:
14.3 hh
Color:
Flea-bitten gray
Markings: None Location:
Columbus, TX
Adoption Fee:
$100
Temperament:
Shay is well mannered
but will swing his head
some and try to get
pushy. When he trusts
his handlers, he acts
like a seasoned horse
and behaves
accordingly. With her
young son, he can get
pushy on the ground at
times, but he's never
done anything
aggressive.
Physical problems / health issues:
Foundered on fronts in
1999. He has had some
radical trims though and
has been sore
afterwards. He's
currently in a home that
is working on the proper
trim for him. He still
has some separation of
the hoof wall that will
heal with more attention
to this feet and more
time. Shay's left front
is worse than his right
front per a vet that
x-rayed his feet. He's
not in pain and is not
lame. Any adopter just
needs to keep his feet
in mind and judge
whether or not he's had
too much riding or is
acting sore. He may
need bute on bad days.
He's currently on a
natural trimming regime
and responding very
well.
Interaction with horses:
So far, he's getting
along fine with others.
Interaction with people:
Shay prefers to be left
alone.
History: Seized
by law enforcement and
awarded to the
organization.
Training / abilities:
Well broke for all
levels of rider, knows
his gaits and his cues,
neck reins, very
responsive. At a recent
show with a young boy,
he decided he wanted to
canter a bit to show
off! He was easily
controllable and acted
like a gentleman despite
the surroundings.
Experience level
required to work with
this horse:
Novice under saddle in a
relatively confined area
(he's had a child on him
in a large pasture and
an arena and was good).
Shay can get pushy on
the ground, so someone
with some amount of
experience with horses
is necessary. He needs
to know you mean
business on the ground
or he can take some
advantage. He has been
trail ridden lightly.
Has this horse ever:
Bucked?
No. Reared? No.
Kicked?
No. Bitten?
No. Other?
No.
Ground handling:
Catch? Yes.
Lead? Yes. Tie?
Yes.
Trailer?
Yes.
Clip?
Unknown.
Trim Feet?
Yes.
Bathe? Yes.
Special needs: A
feed such as Safe and
Sound or Safe Choice is
good for previously
foundered horses. He
will need to be
restricted from spring
grasses as we are unsure
what triggered his
initial bout of
founder. The sugar in
spring grasses will
often cause horses to
founder. So far though,
he's doing fine on
pasture turn out. He
runs and runs in the
pastures with no
lameness issues at all.
