Sands
Breed: Paint Sex:
Mare DOB:
1997 Weight: Height:
15 hh
Location:
Joshua, TX
Adoption Fee:
$100
Temperament:
Sands is a nice mare who is mostly easy to handle. She’s become
more spirited with another horse around, but is a good
girl. She’s still young so has some energy despite her lameness
issues. Her energy level does not
match up with her restricted movement due to the blown suspensory
ligament and resulting in fetlock swelling
Physical problems / health issues:
Sands has a blown suspensory ligament that
appears to be from an old injury. It was made worse
by a recent pregnancy. The added pressure to her “good”
leg causes both fetlocks to swell when she gets too much exercise.
HfH has consulted with a vet on her condition and there is
nothing that can be done except to make her as comfortable as
possible. She needs bute or buteless when she’s in a lot of pain,
needs to be kept on dry ground with limited turnout. When she
over does it, her leg swells and her movement is even more
restricted.
Interaction with horses:
She is dominant in a herd of one mare,
a jenny and a goat. She seems to prefer the company of
the goat.
Interaction with people:
History:
Previous owner donated her due to her lameness
issues.
Trail horse possibly used for sports due to the condition of her
back legs and broodmare. >
She is a companion only due to her blown suspensory, but has good
manners on the ground, except for some dominance
at feeding time.
Experience level required to work with this horse: Advanced Beginner.
Has this horse ever:
Bucked?
No. Reared? No. Kicked? No. Bitten?
Yes,
she bit her foster mom
when food was involved.
Other?
No.
Ground handling:
Catch?
Yes
Lead? Yes Tie?
Yes Trailer? Yes Clip?
Yes Trim Feet? Yes Bathe? Yes
Special needs:
Needs a small turnout area since with too much exercise or use of
her legs, her fetlocks swell. She is in pain at times
and her comfort level needs to be monitored. She needs bute or
buteless on bad days. Sands
needs access to a dry
stall during wet times as mud pulls on her legs and results in
increased swelling.
Other comments:
Sands has issues at feeding time and needs separation from other
horses when fed. She can try
and push her handlers
around when feed is involved.
