Roscoe
Breed:
Arab/QH Sex:
Gelding DOB:
2004 Weight:
720 lbs. Height:
14 hh
Color: Sorrel
with red mane
Markings:
White blaze, white on
three feet
Location:
San Antonio, TX
Adoption Fee:
$250
Temperament:
Mild mannered, but like
a typical kid, gets
bored, is inquisitive
and gets antsy at
times.
Physical problems /
health issues:
None known at this
time.
Interaction with horses:
Gets along well with the
three mares in “his”
herd. Tried introducing
an older gelding of 28
years, and Roscoe chased
him quite a bit,
apparently to establish
dominance.
Interaction with people:
Easily approachable.
Used to be a little
“kicky” at grooming
time, but has overcome
that. Care is still
taken when grooming his
back end and tail
although he has not
actually kicked.
History: Seized
by law enforcement, then
surrendered to HfH. His
current foster parents
adopted his mom
(originally known as
Kennedy) and wanted to
reunite the two until he
gets adopted.
Training / abilities:
Roscoe has only had a
little ground handling
by his foster parents,
but has been handled by
a professional trainer
on two occasions so
far. He worked well for
the trainer, including
loading into a stock
trailer. He gets a bit
“pushy” at times while
being led, and needs to
be reminded to slow
down.
Experience level
required to work with
this horse:
Advanced beginner on the
ground. Needs to be
firm with him but not
overbearing.
Has this horse ever:
Bucked? No
Reared? Yes, in
play with another horse
Kicked? Yes,
when he was first
fostered. At that time,
he simply hadn't been
petted or groomed very
much. Bitten?
No, but gets “lippy”
when standing near him.
Don't know if he's
trying to play or be
dominant. When standing
for the farrier, he held
on to his foster dad's
shirt sleeve the entire
time. Don't know if it
was for balance or he
was feeling a little
insecure. Other?
N/A
Ground handling:
Catch? Easy to catch Lead? Will lead but
needs to be reminded to
slow down. Tie?
Has been tied for short
periods of time only on
a blocker tie ring
(allows a horse to pull
back and release.
Trailer? Trainer
has been able to load
him on both occasions he
came out to work with
Roscoe. Foster parents
are trying to continue
with the trailer loading
lessons, so he won't
regress. Clip? Not known. Trim Feet? He is still a
little touchy about
having his feet handled,
but has allowed the
farrier to trim them on
the last two occasions.Bathe?
Doesn't like the water. Needs more
desensitization in this
area.
Special needs: A
good trainer with horse
savvy, a kind but firm
hand, and a gentle
heart.
Other comments:
Roscoe was gelded in
February 2007 just
before coming to his
current foster home, and
has acted “studdish” on
a few occasions. He has
a good personality,
though, and good looks
too. His mane is very
red, and his foster
parents call him “Roscoe
Red”. He is spirited
and plays well with the
only younger horse in
the herd, who is 6. He
previously had another
playmate more his own
age, and they played
very well together. His
mom is part of “his”
herd, and they nicker to
each other when
separated until again
reunited. Once Roscoe
leaves his foster home
and his real mom, he
will need someone who
will spend some time
with him. He's still a
kid and gets bored, so
the more handling and
training he can get, the
happier he will be. He
amuses himself at times,
playing with the water
hose, his foster mom's
pasture walking stick
(an old mop handle), and
has found many of the
bird houses (which are
mounted on 2” PVC pipe)
scattered throughout the
pasture, and has torn
them down to amuse
himself.
