Temperament: Ritter is a very nice gelding, his foster mom says he's "a jewel".  She also described him as "confident" and "reasonable". He will let her mess with him into oblivion, so he's people oriented (once caught).

Physical problems / health issues: 11-20-06: Ritter has gained weight and is just the beauty we thought he would be!

Interaction with horses: Not yet turned out with others, but does like the ladies.  He will need to be monitored and slowly introduced to mixed herds.  However, he seems to be doing well with the foster home's current dominant gelding with mares on the property.

Interaction with people: 11-20-06 update: Already has gained trust with his foster mom and seemed to gravitate to her in an unfamiliar situation.  Definitely will bond with his “person.”  Startles at motion around his head, but settles right back down quickly.

History: Donation in lieu of law enforcement seizure.

Training / abilities: November 20, 2006…Ritter has finally gotten healthy enough to go through an evaluation.  He took the saddle and bridle with no objections.  Took the D-ring snaffle with no problem.  He did play with it some.  Ritter has been ridden, but probably by someone who kicked on him for “go” and yanked on him for “stop.”

While Ritter was nervous and seemed unsure of what the rider had in store for him, he behaved like a prince. Never offered to run-off, buck or rear.  He was apprehensive about what was going to happen, but within 10 minutes, he was moving off the rider’s leg.  He is young and is a cooperative and quick learner.  Once he is more relaxed, his skill level may be more.  That will emerge with time and trust.  He moves nicely in a trot and we’ll be able to assess more in time as well.

Experience level required to work with this horse: Intermediate.

Has this horse ever:  Bucked? No. Reared? No. Kicked? No. Bitten? No. Other? No.

Ground handling: Catch? Not easily, but foster home working on this.  Lead? Yes. Tie? Yes. Trailer? Yes. Clip? Unknown. Trim Feet? Yes. Bathe? Yes.

Special needs:

Other comments: From the evaluator:  “I’m looking forward to seeing how Ritter does with a few months of training.   I do believe he will be a great little horse once he realizes we’re not going to hurt him.  I think he has a bright future ahead of him.”

Ritter is a true diamond-in-the-rough who has terrific potential.
