Temperament: Raven is a sweetheart. She really is very calm on the ground and has great potential as a family horse.

Physical problems / health issues: Raven injured her knee in the pasture in mid-October.  The vet diagnosed her with strain/sprain that healed by December with limited turnout.  She never did go lame on it, but it was enlarged.  Two x-rays (side and front) showed some swelling.  The vet indicated that there's a possibility of some bone spurs that could cause problems in the future, perhaps some arthritis too, but it's conjecture at this point.  She could also remain perfectly sound as she's been all along.  As of March 2006, she's looking great and no lameness noted at all.

Interaction with horses: Middle of the herd in her current foster home. She's now with a gelding and a filly half her age and she's lowest in the herd.  She tries to avoid confrontations with them.

Interaction with people:

History: She was seized due to neglect. She was previously used as a brood mare.

Training / abilities: Raven was evaluated by Renee Ilse, John Lyons trainer, and is ready to begin saddle training.  According to Renee,” I definitely think that Raven has potential to be trained and become a good, safe riding horse.”

Experience level required to work with this horse: Novice on the ground. Someone more experienced to get her through her under saddle training.

Has this horse ever: Bucked? No. Reared? No. Kicked? Yes, but only a few isolated times when she first came into foster care. Bitten? No. Other? Pins her ears back when approached and sometimes turns away. Gets over it quickly if spoken to and halter or lead rope put on.  Has a terrible dread of paste wormers or anything given orally, her foster mom is working on this.  She offers no bite, kick, or rear, but does do a lot of head tossing when she sees it coming!

Ground handling: Catch? Yes. Lead? Yes. Tie? Yes. Trailer? Yes. Clip? No. Trim Feet? Yes.  Bathe? Yes.

Special needs: None known.

Other comments: This is one beautiful and agreeable mare, all she needs is training.  Really, should not be sitting in foster care, she has all the attributes of a solid horse for someone - beautiful, stout, kind and willing.
