New
Moon
Breed: Arabian
Sex: Gelding
DOB: 2004
Height:
Color: Bay
Markings:
Left reat sock, snip
Location:
Hunt, TX Adoption Fee:
$500
Temperament:
Friendly with people and
other horses. He
spooks on occasion, but
gains control quickly.
He has a typical Arabian
temperament!
Physical problems /
health issues:
none known
Interaction with horses:
He does well with a 13
year old injured gelding
and our 20+ older mare.
He runs them off their
food, but isn’t
aggressive about it (we
monitor their
feedings). Before the
gelding was injured, he
was boss, but now that
he is injured (hoof)
Moon thinks he is king
of the hill! He loves
to frolic and play with
his pasture mates
although they do not
share in his enthusiasm!
Interaction with people:
He is standoffish at
first, but if you try
and ignore him, he will
seek you out! We play,
brush, and interact with
him at least twice a day
to improve his
confidence. We have a
6, 8, and 12 year old
children that are always
around him and he does
really well.
History:
He was seized due to
neglect in July 2008 in
a multi-horse seizure.
Training / abilities:
He was ridden in a
previous foster home and
had some issues. He
flipped the rider twice,
but after the second
time (which was a few
minutes after the first)
he never did it again.
I feel this was a rider
issue, not Moons. He
was also reported to
buck when first being
ridden, but they were
able to ride him a lot
and to the point where
he didn’t buck. I
believe they were the
first to “break” him and
this is when all this
occurred. We were told
he rides beautifully. I
would not put a beginner
or even intermediate
rider on him until these
issues are evaluated or
he is worked with by a
trainer or someone
familiar with newly
broke horses. I feel
that once he finds
someone that will work
with him, he will be an
excellent horse!
Experience level
required to work with
this horse:
Advanced under
saddle, beginner on the
ground.
Has this horse ever:
Bucked? Yes, in
previous foster home but
we have not ridden him.
Reared? Not
in current foster home,
but he did in a previous
one. Kicked? In
previous foster home but
has never with us.
Bitten? In
previous foster home but
he has not even
threatened to do it with
us. Other?
Ground handling:
Catch? Most of
the time. He does not
like to be “caught” but
we are working on this.
Lead? Yes
Tie? Yes
Trailer? The only
time he has been
trailered in current
foster home, it took a
little coaxing! He
needs work on this which
we are doing. Clip?
Not tried. Trim
Feet? Tries to get
away, but only for a
second, then he stands
patiently! Bathe? Not
tried.
Special needs:
None
Other comments:
We have had Moonie since
the end of January
2009. He is a very
sweet horse that just
needs some confidence
built up and to have
consistent handling
(which we do). When he
has tried to be pushy
with us (when it is
feeding time!) he stops
immediately when we put
our elbow up and
respects our space. He
is a typical younger
horse and will test his
limits, but never in an
aggressive manner. I am
not sure what training
methods were used
previously, but I am
hoping we can start from
the ground up again. He
is very friendly with
his herd and loves to
frolic and play with
them. We have started
fresh from the beginning
and once he settles in a
little while longer, we
will take him to our
trainer and see what he
knows to continue his
saddle training. He is
absolutely stunning
galloping in the
pasture!
