Temperament: Major is a wonderful old soul who has seen and done a lot in his years.  He was a race horse, used for hunter/jumper, did a stint at a therapeutic riding program, then came to HfH after sustaining an eye injury.  He was adopted by a charter school for their equine program.  This kids did very well with him.  He would stand for hours to
let them brush and pet him.  He's well adjusted to the blindness in his right eye, it was removed in 2003, but does need to know you are there with his handler's voice. Some awareness of issues with his blind side will be necessary at all times.

Physical problems / health issues:  Blind in right eye, it was removed in 2003.  Can still be a bit weary about it, so needs to be reminded when you are on that side.

Interaction with horses: Gets along well with a mixed herd, starts out observing the herd and then may move up in the ranks.  He has mounted a mare in heat a few times, but no dangerous behaviors.

Interaction with people:

History: Donated by a therapy program due to the eye issue.  Major was adopted by a Charter school for their equine program which was recently discontinued. So, he came back to find another home. Raced, hunter/jumper, therapy program, children's horsemanship program (no riding by the kids there, only worked with him on the ground with direct supervision).

Training / abilities: Major is well trained in English riding, he was even known to sidepass and had auto lead changes. It's been some years since he's been ridden regularly and a over a year since anyone has been on him.  Major was also used on some trails in a previous foster home before his adoption and did fine going western. He's older, so can only do light riding, but he should still be fine for general work on the flat and some light trails.  Major is rusty under saddle, but is willing to try. He tries to find ways he can get around doing it, but once he sees that he can't avoid it, he cooperates.

Experience level required to work with this horse: Advanced beginner on the ground, strong advanced beginner under saddle.  Major will try to push the envelope with his handler once, but is easily corrected and falls right into line.  Hey, even an older guy's gotta try, right?!

Has this horse ever:  Bucked? No. Reared? No. Kicked? No. Bitten? No. Other? No.

Ground handling: Catch? Yes. Lead? Yes. Tie? Yes. Trailer? Yes. Clip? Unknown. Trim Feet? Yes. Bathe? Yes.

Special needs: Senior feed, currently getting 1 gallon morning and night.

Other comments: Major deserves a home where he can live out the rest of his life, he's a nice horse to be around and is family friendly on the ground.  He likes his blanket and is cooperative in allowing it to be put on.
