John Wayne
Breed: QH or TB or Cross
Sex: Gelding
DOB: 2001
Weight:
Height: 15.2 hh
Location: Rockwall, TX
Adoption Fee: $100

Temperament: John Wayne is a very friendly gelding, he's the first horse to the fence when people arrive.  He loves attention.

Physical problems / health issues: John's left rear foot caused him many problems and he experienced recurrent abscessing in that foot when he first came into care.  Though completely recovered now, the foot was x-rayed and there is too much bone loss for John to ever be able to sustain a rider. He's perfectly pasture sound though and the foot has completely healed.

Interaction with horses: He can be dominant with others, but not mean.  He does fine in his current herd and would make a fine companion.

Interaction with people:

History: He was donated when his owner could no longer care for him. John Wayne was given to the donor by a breeder who had planned on using him as a breeding stallion.  When the donor got him, his left hind hoof was about 18 inches long. He was diagnosed as having chronic founder.  The hoof was trimmed back slowly over time.
From his vet, "Radiographic interpretation of the foot revealed pedal osleitis of the lateral aspect of the third phalanx.  Due to the chronic nature of this condition, I recommended the horse to be a non-riding companion."

Training / abilities: Good ground manners.  At one point, his foster mom thought he would be rideable, so she did some training with a saddle.  But, there is significant bone loss in his left hind and the vet recommended companion only status.

Experience level required to work with this horse: Intermediate to experienced.

Has this horse ever: Bucked? No.  Reared? No  Kicked? No  Bitten?  No  Other?

Ground handling: Catch?  Yes  Lead? Yes  Tie? Yes Trailer? Needs work on this   Clip? Unknown  Trim Feet? Requires sedation, though was doing better with this  Bathe? Yes

Other comments: John Wayne is a beautiful horse and very personable. He would make a great companion horse -easy keeper and well behaved and pretty!
