Temperament:
Zip is a real
sweetheart, even before
he was gelded. He is a
former show horse and
has very good
manners. He is
respectful of your space
and seems to be
confident in all
situations exposed to so
far.
Physical problems /
health issues:
Zip has foundered
sometime previously, but
it does not appear to be
too severe. He is
barefoot right now and
appears sound when
riding him in sand. He
will probably require
shoes with pads if he is
ridden on harder
ground. His feet are in
very good shape right
now. Zip’s diet will
have to be closely
monitored to ensure he
has no flare-ups of his
founder. Due to the
large amount of white on
his back and face, he
will require sunscreen
and access to shade. I
think Zip has learned
that if he rolls and
gets dirty, it helps
protect his skin because
he does love to get
dirty!
Interaction with horses:
Zip is currently turned
out with three geldings
and they all get along
great. Having just
recently been gelded, he
is still quite
interested in the mares
in the adjoining
pasture.
Interaction with people:
Zip is a courteous,
respectful horse and is
very laid back. He loves
attention, but he
doesn’t especially like
being fly sprayed, but
he deals with it okay.
History: Zip was
part of a seizure of 75
horses from Hunt Co. He
was one of 9 studs and
several mares and foals
that were all turned out
together. He was a
former show horse and
was a Reserve World
Champion Masters Western
Pleasure Horse.
Training / abilities:
I have ridden Zip and he
still remembers his old
show days by keeping his
neck flat and level. He
has the slowest jog, so
much so that it’s not
much faster than his
walk. He’s pretty rusty
on his leads at a lope,
but I’m sure with some
practice and exercise he
will pick that up once
again. I’m sure it’s
been years since he’s
been ridden and it will
take some time to get
him back into shape.
Experience level
required to work with
this horse: Zip
would probably be good
with beginners, however
I would caution that
having spent his first
13 years as a stud, that
whoever has him
shouldn’t become too
complacent about him
around mares. He is so
laid back that it would
be easy to be lulled
into a false sense of
security with him around
other horses. Zip would
flourish under an
experienced or somewhat
experienced rider that
wanted a horse to show.
Has this horse ever:
Bucked? Yes
when pushed to hard
Reared? No.
Kicked?
No. Bitten? No. Other?
Ground handling:
Catch? Yes.
Lead?
Yes. Tie?
Yes.
Trailer?
Yes. Clip? Yes.
Trim Feet?
Yes.
Bathe?
Yes, but be aware
he does like to be
dirty, so he usually
rolls right after a
bath.
Special needs:
Right now, the only
concern is the fact that
he has foundered in the
past. He will probably
require shoes with pads
and maybe even special
shoes like heart bar or
egg bar shoes if ridden
on hard or rocky
surfaces.
Other comments:
Zip may truly be one of
those once in a lifetime
horses. If he stays
sounds with shoes and
pads, there is no reason
that he could not go on
to be a show horse for
someone. I think Zip
would also do extremely
well in a therapeutic
riding program, given
his temperament. He will
need to be kept
separated from mares for
some time until he has
figured out that he’s no
longer a stud.
