Temperament: Hidalgo is a very calm horse. His biggest concern right now is gaining weight. He is good around kids, donkeys and other horses. As he has gotten stronger he is better able to stand his ground with regard to his food. He has let the dominant mare in the pasture know not to mess with food.

Physical problems / health issues: He has a slightly deviated septum; the vet indicated is likely a little nerve damage from a hit or a fall. It does not cause a problem but his lip quivers a little.

Interaction with horses: He is a very laid back horse and shares food, pasture and stall with the mini donkey that is with him. He did have to assert himself with the very pushy mare pastured with him.

Interaction with people: He seems to like people. Before his donation he belonged to a 12 year old and was ridden exclusively by her for four years.

History: He was donated in lieu of further law enforcement action being taken. We contacted the ranch that owned him for 10 years prior to this last owner. He was a working horse on large ranch and trained as a roping horse. He began to have some trouble keeping up with the ranch pace and was put on trails. They indicated that he tends to get sore on long trail rides of four hours or more, likely from an old roping injury. His foster home has seen no evidence of any problems. The previous owners and the ranch that sold him both indicated that he was a great “kid” horse and would be good for a beginner.

Training / abilities: Because he is working on gaining weight and getting back to health his foster home has not been able to fully evaluate his abilities. He has good ground manners and no trailering issues. Right now it appears the history we received on him is accurate and he is a very well trained horse.

Experience level required to work with this horse: Based on currently information it would appear a beginning level rider would be fine with this horse.

Has this horse ever: Bucked? No. Reared? No. Kicked? No. Bitten? No. Other?

Ground handling: Catch? Yes. Lead? Yes. Tie? Yes. Trailer? Yes. Clip? Unknown. Trim Feet? Yes. Bathe? Yes.

Special needs: Currently, Hidalgo is healthy but just needs to gain some weight. He is off his rehab diet and is able to take full feed. He is putting on weight nicely.
