Temperament: Helen is super sweet and calm. She listens to your voice and tries her hardest to do whatever you want her to. She cannot see so is very ‘in tune’ with where her humans are. She is very careful not to run into you as long as you let her know you are there. If you forget and she bumps you, she stops and sniffs you as if to check and see if you are ok.

Physical problems / health issues: Helen is blind at this time. Due to her young age we are exploring the option of getting her eyes fixed surgically. Helen also has an old injury to her left hind leg that was not treated properly so she has a large amount of proud flesh on it. She also has a lesser injury to her right back pastern with a much smaller area of proud flesh. She is undergoing treatment to reduce the amount of proud flesh on both back legs and make them both more normal looking and functional again.

Interaction with horses: Helen would like to be with other horses but is in a pen by herself until she gains her weight and recovers from her injuries. Also, she would not be safe in a large pasture due to her blindness. She is becoming attached to Chulita’s Beau, a cute and sassy black pony who stays with her voluntarily while the other horses go out in the pasture. A bell has been attached to Beau so Helen knows where he is at all times.

Interaction with people: Very careful and tolerant. Her foster can change her bandages without even putting a halter on her. Occasionally she will look up from her food when you touch a tender spot as if to say, “Hey, take it easy back there”. Then she goes back to eating.

History: Helen was left at a foster home while the people were away. She was tied up and abandoned. The people came home that evening to find a blind, injured, and starved horse tied up in their yard.

Training / abilities: Unknown at this time. Helen is halter broke and easy to handle.

Experience level required to work with this horse: Beginner to Intermediate to handle and experienced for her medical needs until she is healthy and sound again.

Has this horse ever:  Bucked? No. Reared? No. Kicked? No. Bitten? No. Other?

Ground handling: Catch? Yes. Lead? Yes, handler must take care where she is led because of her blindness. Tie? Yes. Trailer? Yes. Clip? Unknown. Trim Feet? Yes. Bathe? Yes.

Special needs: Right now Helen needs special care for her injuries and blindness. Hopefully in the future we can solve both issues and get her completely healthy again.
