Temperament: Fresca is very calm and used to handling on the ground since her leg injury required a good bit of daily interaction and vet work.  You can waive your arms in front of her face, waive objects and make noise, she's quite desensitized for her age. Fresca does need training however to learn to get out of her handler's space more.  She can get distracted from paying attention to her handler, pretty typical two year old.  Fresca isn't throwing her weight around when she gets into your space nor being aggressive at all, she simply loves people and wants to be in your lap.  In that sense, she's very trusting of her humans.  But, she also needs to learn her boundaries with some good training.  Should be a joy to teach and bond with in the round pen.

Physical problems / health issues: She had a severe leg injury when she arrived that was left unattended by her owner. She will require surgery to repair infected bone in her left rear leg.  Since the injury was not dealt with early on, the bone growth was significant.  The bone required shaving down and the infected tissue needed removing.

Surgery was performed in late April and though she has a ways to go with flushing and dressings and stall rest, she appears to be on the mend.  Her vet feels she will be totally sound for riding.  She no longer wears a dressing on the wound and it appears to be progressing nicely. Another couple of months and the wound should be completely healed.

August 14, 2006 Update: Fresca has had an a second surgery to remove additional bone fragments. However, her prognosis is still looking good.

Interaction with horses: Currently gets along fine with a gelding.

Interaction with people:

History: Seized by law enforcement and awarded to the organization.

Training / abilities: None under saddle, she's just a youngster.  Her ground manners are okay, though the issue of her getting in your space needs to be addressed.  She should be easy to train up since she's already quite desensitized to her surroundings and is easy going.

Experience level required to work with this horse: Intermediate, though has potential to be a beginner horse on the ground.  Unknown at this time under saddle.

Has this horse ever:  Bucked? No. Reared? No. Kicked? No. Bitten? No. Other? No.

Ground handling: Catch? Yes. Lead? Yes. Tie? Yes. Trailer? Yes. Clip? Unknown. Trim Feet? Yes. Bathe? Yes.

Special needs:

Other comments: Beautiful, young, pocket pony type horse who just needs some formal training to reinforce where she's supposed to be in relation to her handler.  Shouldn't take much at all to work that out.
