Fred
Astaire
Breed:
Quarterhorse Sex:
Gelding DOB:
1986 Weight: Height:
15 hh
Location:
Wimberly (Greater Austin
Area), TX
Adoption Fee:
$100
Temperament: Kind, gentle,
cuddly and cute. Very easy to work with, would make a great family
horse.
Physical problems / health issues: He doesn't have many teeth left, so those he does have will need to be kept in good condition with a twice yearly check up. Fred
suffers from some soreness in a front leg. At his age, he has
his good days and his bad days. So, any adopter will need to
be responsive to his needs and possibly bute him on bad days.
He could still be lightly ridden on his good days and could give
"pony" rides. He's absolutely safe for riding, but at his age,
he's mostly a companion horse.
Interaction with horses: He is bonded at the hip with a mare that is pastured with him. He's not been tested in a larger herd, but will need gentler folk at his age.
Interaction with people:
History: He
was donated to when his owner could no longer properly care for
him. Pleasure horse,
owned by one person for 20 years!
Training / abilities: Well broke, his
foster mom jumped on him bareback and he was fine with it. She rode
him with just a halter and lead ropes. He neck reins and direct
reins, has a great reverse, responded to leg pressure well and has a
"been there, done that" laid back kind of attitude. He was not
tested out of an arena, but his foster mom anticipates he would
be just fine for any rider. Very light
riding mostly at a walk with maybe some light trotting. Astaire had
some pretty severe muscle atrophy in the hind end as evidenced by
the photos when he came to HfH. The angle of his hips and butt
has improved greatly, but we don't feel he can withstand a lot of
riding at his age. Leisurely rides for shorter periods of time
around a ranch are just his speed.

Other comments: Fred Astaire is the
nicest of geldings, a great old soul. He would make a great horse
for a novice or family environment.
