Eliza
Breed:
Grade/QH? Sex: Mare DOB:
~1998
Height:
13.2 hh
Color: Palomino
Markings: Blaze,
left rear sock Location:
Dripping Springs, TX
Adoption Fee:
$250
Temperament:
Eliza was abused and is
timid around people.
While she is making
progress, she still
doesn’t have a lot of
trust in people. She is
a very sweet mare and
clearly wants to come
close and trust. You
can almost see her
arguing with herself at
times as she tries to
drum up the courage to
come up to you.
Physical problems /
health issues:
Eliza has a summer sore
on her left hind leg.
It is at a joint so it
frequently works itself
open and the healing has
to begin again. It
should heal completely
with time, but the
process is very slow.
She appears to have had
extreme head trauma in
the past since she has a
dent in her head. This
could easily explain a
lot of her fears.
Interaction with horses:
Eliza is the least
dominant horse in a
mixed herd. Each horse
has its own stall and
pen area but they are
let out in pasture
together and she gets
along just fine. She is
sweet to the other
horses and loves being
around them.
Interaction with people:
Eliza has finally
started to trust
people. When you work
with her you cannot be
impatient or in a
hurry. If you tense up,
she will sense it and
become more nervous
herself. She can be
very difficult to
catch. However, if you
hang out with her for a
while, and just stand
there looking away from
her, she will usually
come up to your back and
put her head next to
your shoulder. Staring
at her makes her
nervous. She will stand
in cross ties to be
groomed but is usually
on her guard and tense.
History: Awarded
to HfH after being
seized by law
enforcement due to
neglect and abuse by her
owner.
Training / abilities:
Eliza’s foster is using
Parelli methods to try
to build her confidence
on the ground. She
seems to have a pattern
of slow progress for a
while and then a big
step back. However, the
time needed to bring her
forward again is getting
less. She seems to
forget what she learned
from one training time
to the next. Her
trainer has to have
patience and allow her
tiny steps to make
progress. She could
easily revert if she is
pushed too hard. She
now stands fairly well
for blanketing. Her
eyes get big and she
tenses up, but she
stands for it. Treats
are a good key for
training her. There is
a photo of her being led
with a person on her
back but riding her is
not recommended at this
point in her training
because of her fears.
With time she can
probably be worked back
to this level, but it is
going to take work and
slow steady progress.
Experience level
required to work with
this horse:
Intermediate on the
ground. Eliza needs a
kind, gentle, and
patient trainer; rough
methods will never work
on this horse.

Kicked? Has kicked out
in the past when her leg
wound is touched Bitten?

Special needs:
Eliza needs a forever
home with a person who
has experience with
abused horses. In time,
she will trust but needs
constant reassurance,
patience, and lots of
love. Her adopter must
be willing to invest a
lot of time in her, but
she will be well worth
the commitment.
Other comments:
Eliza is a gorgeous pony
with very good movement.
