DOB: 1993
Weight:
Height: 15 hh
Arrival Date: September 2004
Location: Alleyton, TX
Adoption Fee: $100

Temperament: Dottie is an extremely sweet mare and likes people. She readily comes up to just about any person.  She is fine around dogs and has been in a pasture with cows.

Physical problems / health issues: Dottie has a history of founder and laminitis. Her front feet have been x-rayed and she has some rotation in the front feet, the right foot being slightly more than the left. From the x-rays, there appears to be no navicular problems. The foster home is using a natural trimmer which seems to help a lot with the lameness.  A natural trimmer should be used that is familiar with foundering and laminitis issues. Her feet are too brittle and thin to sustain shoes.

Interaction with horses: She has been pastured with geldings, mares and a foal. She gets along with all of them and she became very attached to the foal. She is pastured with one gelding now and is the lower horse. She is very sweet and if she does get pushy – she is all talk with very little action. She has been dominant in a herd situation before but again she is a big bluffer when it comes to being dominant.

Interaction with people: She likes people and readily comes up to people unless she thinks you are going to do something she does not like. She is gentle and likes attention, brushing and is nosy and inquisitive.

History: She was donated by her owner who could no longer manage her laminitis issues. She had been used as a pleasure horse.

Training / abilities: Supposed to be well broke to ride but due to her lameness she will only be a companion horse.  Currently, she's still tender footed fairly often.  She has good weeks and bad weeks. The rockier and harder the ground, the more tenderness she has on her front feet. She still runs and acts silly when her feet feel good.

Experience level required to work with this horse: Advanced beginner

Has this horse ever:  Bucked? No. Reared? No. Kicked? No. Bitten? No. Other? No.

Ground handling: Catch? Yes. Lead? Yes Tie? Yes Trailer? Yes Clip? Hand trim with scissors. Trim Feet? Yes Bathe? Yes

Special needs: In the best interest of her feet, Dottie should not be stalled. She needs pasture space for walking to keep her feet healthy. She does not seem to have a problem with grasses but she has not been on any rich, improved grass. She has not been sick since entering her current foster home in April of 2005. She needs regular hoof trimming. She eats hay, is in a large pasture with grass and is restricted to Safe & Sound Feed (Acco). She is an easy keeper with little maintenance.

Other comments: She would make a wonderful family pasture pet or companion for any horse, especially an older horse. She is a really beautiful, striking mare.
