Temperament: Diva is a very sweet mare.

Physical problems / health issues: When Diva arrived, she was very thin and has regained a lot of weight although she still is fairly thin and has a ways to go to completely fill out.  Her front feet show that she has foundered in the past and the farrier said that she may not be able to re-grow normally-shaped front feet as the shape of her feet suggest that her coffin bones are eroded from the founder. A chiropractor said that the “cap” was knocked off of her right hip bone at some time in her life and he thinks she has arthritis in her knees and probably in her back and hips.

Interaction with horses:  She is very low hierarchy. She needs to be fed separately because the other horses will run her off of her feed and she will not fight for a higher position in the herd. She is very bonded with the other horses that she is pastured with, especially one mare.

Interaction with people: Diva will initially walk off when approached, but will allow herself to be caught after a few steps. Once haltered she is very compliant.  When she first came to rescue she was taken to an adoption event and was handled by everyone and simply loved the attention.  She seemed to understand that the humans around her cared and she was so good around the children too.  Diva was an excellent example of the neglect that we often see in rescue and brought a great deal of awareness of how bad things can get for our beautiful companions.

History: Was left in a small field all alone to starve and die, not much else is known.  It appears that she was bred for racing and she has a Jockey Club lip tattoo.  Her enlarged teats and her vaginal area indicate that she may have had several babies.

Training / abilities: Companion only at this time and should not be ridden.

Experience level required to work with this horse: Intermediate.

Has this horse ever:  Bucked? no Reared? no Kicked? no Bitten? no Other?

Ground handling: Catch? yes Lead? yes Tie? yes Trailer? yes Clip? Yes Trim Feet? Yes  Bathe? Yes Worm? Yes

Special needs:  Diva is a bit of a hard keeper and has a hard time gaining weight.
