Temperament:  Very sweet and easy going guy.  He has soft, kind eyes. He allowed us to pick up his hooves and hold them up. He leads, backs, stands - even with a crowd of new people all around him. He stood with the weight tape blowing in the wind all over him. He can be a bit pushy when leading and was bit difficult to load when he was first brought in by HfH. But after about 10 minutes when he figured we were not gonna take 'no' from him, he walked right in. He rode and unloaded very well - even surrounded by 5 people with 5 other horses and 2 dogs all making noises.

When he was still a stud, we decided to reinforce his area with more fencing.  We backed the truck up to Comanche's round pen, started to unload the rolled panels and the tie wire snapped - so I leaped away and the panels unrolled themselves, slamming into the round pen panels right where he was standing!! He tossed his head and backed up a few feet - then nickered, saying "what the heck are y'all doin' ?"  As we worked around the outside of the round pen, Comanche was busy blowing on our hands, giving advice, and attempting to steal the pliers -- this horse must have been seriously loved and part of a family in the past. He has such a soft mouth!  He takes carrots very gently - not even a touch of teeth on palm, he loves being touched and scratched all over - no problems touching his belly or hind legs.

Physical problems / health issues:  At this point, Comanche is at a very healthy weight for his build.  His teeth also look good, with the possible exception of his lower canines.  He still has some skin issues, cuts and sores, which need to heal.

The bad news is that Comanche's heart murmur is very severe.  Dr. Denman said that it sounds most pronounced on the right side and he believes that it is a valve problem which is allowing blood to backwash between two of the chambers of the heart.  Dr. Denman said that he doesn't think that there is anything that needs to be done medically for Comanche, but that his activities need to be restricted to just being a horse.  In Dr. Denman's words "he would probably be ok to walk around the yard a little with a child on his back, but I definitely wouldn't ride him down the street."

Because of the heart murmur, Dr. Denman refrained from floating Comanche's teeth.  As stated above, his teeth looked good and even though Dr. Denman would have liked to knock some off of the lower canines they weren't causing any problems.  He said it would be better to save the anesthesia until the molars needed attention and take care of them all at the same time.

Also, his lower esophageal opening is very weak.  This is evidenced by large amounts of water draining from nostrils after he takes a drink. This may result in dehydration since only a small amount of the water he drinks actually goes into his stomach. It also gives him the appearance of a clear runny discharge from his nostrils - we will watch this closely during rehab to see if he will need more fluids.  This may or may not improve as he gets healthier, time will tell.

Interaction with horses: He is turned out with our other three geldings and is low man in the herd.

Interaction with people: Generally easy going and easy to work with. Can be a bit pushy when leading, but this should be easily fixed with a little work on the ground. Personality wise - this guy is one of the nicest fosters I have ever had. He talks a lot, calling out when the front door opens or when someone pulls in the driveway - he likes everyone - from toddlers to little kids to grown ups. He's also a very tall boy - we measured him at 15.2 hh but I believe that is wrong, I think he is more like 16 hh.

History: Seized by law enforcement.

Training / abilities: Due to his heart murmur, Comanche will always be companion only.

Experience level required to work with this horse: Intermediate.

Has this horse ever:  Bucked?  Reared?  Kicked?  Bitten?  Other?

Ground handling: Catch?  Lead? Yes Tie?  Trailer? Yes Clip?  Trim Feet?  Bathe? Tolerated water on his legs just fine, nothing else has been tried yet.
