Cherokee
Breed:
Paint Sex:
Gelding DOB:
1995 Weight: Height:
15.2 hh
Location:
Haslet, TX
Adoption Fee:
$100
Temperament:
Gentle, appreciative and
kind. His foster home states he is a wonderful horse.
Physical problems / health issues: Cherokee has COPD, also called "heaves" or "wind broken".
For more information see:
http://www.recoveryeq.com/copd_horses.htm
Cherokee was administered
steroid injections, but these were only effective for 3-4 days and
they are not good for long term use. He has also been on the most
commonly used drug for COPD which is Ventipulmin. He has not been
on this drug since August and mostly needs it during the hotter
months. This drug will run ~$50 a month, depending on where an
adopter gets the prescription filled. He gets easily winded with 5
minutes of extended walking/trotting without a rider, so he is a
companion only horse. His right
stifle also pops at times, but this doesn't seem to bother him at a
walk on the ground
Interaction with horses: He gets along fine with others and was pastured in a mixed herd.
Interaction with people:
History: He
was donated to the organization due to his need for medications to alleviate
his breathing difficulty. Cherokee was a pleasure horse, general
western riding until he suffered an infection, then developed
heaves.
Training / abilities:
Reported to be broke to
ride and requires an intermediate rider. However, his COPD is too
bad to withstand riding and no one in HfH has been on him to test
him out because his heaves is so bad. Occasional leadline use
with children for very short periods of time during cooler months,
but mostly a companion only horse.
Experience level required to work with this horse:
Advanced beginner on the
ground.
Has this horse ever:
Bucked?
No. Reared?
No. Kicked? No. Bitten?
No. Other?
No.
Ground handling:
Catch?
Yes. Lead? Yes Tie?
Yes Trailer? Yes Clip?
Unknown. Trim Feet? Yes Bathe? Yes
Special needs:
Will always
need medication to control his breathing. Needs a non-sandy, dust
free environment for optimum health with frequent turn out for fresh
air. Straw and shavings are often too dusty for horses with COPD, so
rubber mats and other forms of non-dusty stall bedding would be best
for him.
Other comments:
His vet suggested that
we move him to a cooler climate so HfH will be looking for a home
ideally in OK. We may consider other locations as well.
