Temperament:
Caper is an easy going
Thoroughbred who loves
being around people. She
does not have any of the
usual racing
Thoroughbred vices
(cribbing, weaving,
pacing, etc.) and gets
along very well with all
of the horses in the
herd and also all the
dogs! She has GORGEOUS
long legs and is quite
the beauty out in the
pasture. At her foster
home she’s referred to
as the “super model”
because of her elegant
beauty.
Physical problems / health issues:
Caper was raced until
just a few years ago and
after all that
dedication and work, was
not well taken care of
after an injury. She has
bone chips in her right
hock and a broken
sesamoid bone in her
fetlock on the back
right leg. She limps
slightly when she walks
and cannot be
ridden. This injury is
older and does not
require any
doctoring. Both injuries
are common in race
horses. Even with these
injuries, she can still
periodically “open it
up” out in the pasture
and she’s positively a
work of art.
Interaction with horses:
Caper gets along with
all of the geldings in
the foster herd. Some of
these geldings are very
old and she respects
them. She is very low in
the herd order.
Interaction with people:
Caper is very easy going
but can sometimes get a
little pushy. Once
corrected, however, she
is fine. Because of her
size, she must
understand immediately
that the person is the
head mare. Once she
respects your authority,
she is wonderful!
History: Donated
in lieu of law
enforcement seizure. Her
racing record shows that
she ran through 2005 and
won a decent amount of
money. Her beauty when
running confirms this!
Training / abilities:
Caper can never be
ridden or worked very
hard because of her leg
injuries. However, she
does not need training
since she’s already well
educated. She is one of
those wonderful horses
that will lift each foot
as the farrier
approaches. She stands
tied well and has no
problems with grooming,
bathing, etc.
Experience level
required to work with
this horse:
Intermediate on the
ground just because of
Caper’s size. She will
test you to make sure
you deserve her respect.
Has this horse ever:
Bucked?
No. Reared? No.
Kicked?
No. Bitten?
No. Other?
No.
Ground handling:
Catch? Yes.
Lead? Yes. Tie?
Yes.
Trailer?
Yes.
Clip? Unknown.
Trim Feet?
Yes.
Bathe? Yes.
Special needs:
Caper’s teeth grind
unevenly so the foster
home has found that
wetting her food down
makes it easier for her
to eat. She gets about
12 lbs of feed per day
(not bad for a girl her
size!) with a probiotic
(helps with digestion)
and B-L Solution (herbal
form of Bute)
added. Because of the
uneven grinding of her
teeth, she may need to
have her teeth floated
every six months.
Other comments: Very
few horses are as
beautiful as Caper. She
has long legs, big eyes
and an elegant
neck. Caper gave the
majority of her life to
run on the track for
humans. And then someone
abused that devotion and
did not take care of her
properly when she was
injured. She is loving
and kind and deserves to
find a home that will
show her the affection
and devotion she
deserves after such a
difficult life.
